Microsoft doesn’t allow you to Disable Cortana. You wont to be able to turn off Cortana in Windows 10, however, Microsoft removed that simple on/off switch within the Anniversary Update.

However, it is possible to disable Cortana via a registry hack or group policy setting. This will transforms the yours Windows system Cortana box into a “Search Windows” tool for local application and file searches. It was like in Windows 7 or 8.

Cortana has become more and more restrictive since Windows 10’s release. It was recently updated to ignore your default web browser.

Currently, Cortana continuously launches the Microsoft Edge browser and only uses the Bing search engine when you search. If that sounds like something you don’t need to use.

Here’s the way to turn it off.

Disable Cortana in Windows 10 Home via the Registry:

If you have Windows 10 Home, you must edit the Windows registry to make these changes.

You can also use this little hack trick if you have Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise, but make sure you’re more friendly & comfortable with the Windows registry as opposed to Group Policy Editor.

(If you have Pro or Enterprise, however, we recommend using the Easy Group Policy Editor described in the next section).

Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and its misuse can destabilize or even disable your system. This is a very simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you should have no problem.

Having said that, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use Registry Editor before getting started. And of course, back up the registry (and your computer!) Before making changes.

Do one thing first to Turn off Cortana in Windows 10

You should also create a system restore point before continuing.

Then, open Registry Editor by pressing Windows + R on your keyboard, typing “regedit” in the box, and press Enter.

How to disable Cortana in Windows 10

Navigate to the following key in the left sidebar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search

If the above steps become hard for finding the key to Turn of the Cortana, Simply Copy the above code and paste it in the “Regedit” address bar, which is available on the top of the registry window.

After pasting the above code you will automatically move to the destination where you will be able to Disable Cortana

After above step do these steps

Turn off Cortana in Windows 10

After Right Click on these keys, Click on “Modify “.

Now a window will pop-up on your computer screen.

Replace the DWORD “Value data” to “0” without “”, as shown in below image.

Click on OK.

That’s it. You’re successfully removed Cortana from Windows 10.

Note: You can also use this method to Disable Cortana from Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise Edition.

If you can’t find a “Windows Search” key (folder) below the Windows folder, You will need to create it manually, Follow these steps to create it.

Select Windows folder by Right-click on it, and select New > Key. Name it “Windows Search”. Like the below image.

Select “Windows Search” key (folder) in the left pane by right clicking on it, and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Create and Name the value “AllowCortana”. Double-click the newly created key and set the value data to “0”.

Now you can close the registry editor. You’ll Restart your computer system or you’ll have to sign out and sign back in to changes takes effect.

To revert back your changes and get back Cortana in the future, you can just return here, find the “AllowCortana” value, and delete it or set it to “1”.
